Have you ever wondered what kind of difference an improvement in the speed it takes for your page to load might have on the success of your website. Well it turns out that it is really one of the most important things you can do…
Google recently announced that it would now be placing pagespeed and mobile responsiveness, as two of the most important factors that it will consider in ranking your site in their search results.
But pagespeed can also have a huge effect on converting visitors into customers. A recent UX study found that 1 second delay in page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversions. 47% of consumers expect a web page to load in 2 seconds or less. The numbers are even more dramatic on mobile.
Recently I decided to set out to speed up my site flagstaffconnection.com, both for the reasons above, but also as an example of what is possible, and as a case study of what I can do to help you with your site as well.
When I started this endeavor, I took some initial benchmarks, and it wasn’t all that bad, but there was a lot of room for improvements. Here is where I began:
Testing Tool | Mobile Score | Desktop Score | Load Time |
---|---|---|---|
Pingdom Tools | — | 82 | 2.35 seconds |
Google Pagespeed | 28 | 63 | 2.4 seconcds |
GTmetrix | — | 87 | 3.8 seconds |
With a combination of file compression, caching solutions and server optimizations, I was able to get the site speed reduced dramatically. Here are the improvement statistics:
Testing Tool | Mobile Score | Desktop Score | Load Time |
---|---|---|---|
Pingdom Tools | — | 91 | 852 mili-seconds |
Google Pagespeed | 78 | 100 | 1.1 seconcds |
GTmetrix | — | 93 | 2.2 seconds |
These numbers are dramatic, and anything that loads in a second or less is considered outstanding, but don’t take my word for it, click below to see for yourself:
